This dates back to 1908 when Don Jose Varela Blanco, a yound Spanish immigrant decided to open the first sugar mill, San Isidro Sugar Mill in the new Republic of Panama. Pese is located in a rich and fertile valley in the center of Panama. The economy and population live off of cultivation of sugar cane. The third generation now runs Varela Hermanos, S.A. - the leading producer of distilled spirits in Panama.
